Copilot for Microsoft 365 Legal Pilot
Copilot for Microsoft 365 Legal Pilot
Adoption, governance, and knowledge readiness
Client profile
Global enterprise with a 20-person in-house legal team operating inside Microsoft 365.
The challenge
Copilot was treated as an IT initiative, with conversations stuck at infrastructure rather than day-to-day legal productivity
Inconsistent M365 information architecture — SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive sprawl — limited findability and produced uneven Copilot results
No repeatable usage patterns for common legal work: email, clause extraction, summaries, or meeting follow-ups
Licensing scope was unclear: what's included versus add-ons, and who can access wha
Permission and sensitivity complexity created governance and risk concerns
What we delivered
A phased Copilot for Microsoft 365 pilot program built around the suite's actual workflows.
Phase 1 — Copilot Foundations (M365 Apps)
Practical use cases across Word, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint: summaries, drafting assistance, meeting actions, and slide generation
"Do/don't" guardrails for privileged or sensitive matters
Prompting standards tailored to legal output quality, covering tone, citation expectations, and review checkpoints
Phase 2 — Governance and M365 Knowledge Readiness
Governance posture covering roles, acceptable use policy, and escalation paths for risky outputs
Content readiness work: scoped SharePoint sites, metadata and naming conventions, and targeted cleanup to improve Copilot retrieval within existing permissions
Security configuration alignment so Copilot respects matter boundaries
Phase 3 — Extend with Copilot Studio
Identifying high-value repeatable workflows for a lightweight Copilot Studio assistant (e.g., intake triage, policy Q&A, playbook-guided drafting)
Defining success metrics and rollout approach before expanding beyond the pilot group
